Today, let’s talk about knitting socks. I have to confess right from the beginning that I have never actually successfully knitted a complete pair of socks. I did manage to make a single sock that fit and looked great, but I couldn’t repeat the process. It is my lifelong dream to eventually know how to make socks. I love unique socks, hate mass-produced socks, and think I was destined to be a great sock knitter in another life. So with that in mind, let us explore some of the top knitting books.
Getting Started Knitting Socks
I actually have this book, and really enjoyed the pretty pictures. The instructions are very good as well, but with a hopeless case like me, I’m afraid they didn’t knit my socks for me. The most impressive thing about this book is the perfect 5-star rating it has on Amazon. Apparently you can knit socks by following a book!
Sock Knitting Master Class: Innovative Techniques + Patterns from Top Designers
Written by the same author as the Getting Started book, this expands on some of the cooler sock designs. The front cover rocks – I want a dozen pairs of those socks!
The Knitter's Book of Socks
This book focuses on choosing the correct yarn to ensure your hard work doesn’t go to waste. Since socks endure so much stress, a shoddy yarn choice can cause them to fall apart before you get any wear out of them.
2-at-a-Time Socks
This book was made for people like me. I have briefly played around with knitting two socks at the same time, and I can see the benefits. Fluctuation in tension and technique are a natural part of knitting, so if you knit them both at the same time, you should have uniformly un-uniform socks!
So, who’s with me? Is there anyone out there who wants to tackle the wide world of sock knitting and triumph with me?
